May Newsletter – Spring

Dear Parents,

Happy May!  I cannot believe this is the last month of the school year!  Time flies when you are having fun.  I have seen much growth and maturity in the children since that first day of school.  They have developed caring friendships by helping one another with the activities, playing cooperatively, and taking turns.  Those children returning for the next school year will be great helpers for the new students.

Spring will be the focus for the month of May by learning about bugs and flower growth.

RELIGION- A May altar for Mary will honor all mothers who so generously give us their love and time.  We will continue to follow in the footsteps of Jesus by learning through various stories how Jesus honored and obeyed His mother.  Please remember to send in a picture of mom to display on “Our Honoring Mothers” bulletin board.

SCIENCE/ART- Several variety of flower seeds have been planted to visually help us watch and learn plant growth.  The children will daily document and draw how long each variety takes to sprout, grow, and bloom.  The children will be responsible for keeping a class journal and watering the plants.  We will try to have our own flower garden in the classroom.

What would a flower garden be without bugs!  We will learn about the many characteristics of ladybugs, grasshoppers, and bumblebees.  By using recyclable materials, the children will create their own bug and have a bug parade.

MATH/LANGUAGE ARTS-  By reading the story, “The Best Bug Parade,” the children will focus on materials in the classroom to arrange by size, similarities and differences, shortest to longest, and other characteristics.  Other stories to be read include, “Breakfast for My Mother,” to enhance oral language and memory by reciting the repetition of objects used to make breakfast for mom.  The “Grouchy Ladybug” will introduce time and reinforce sizes smallest to largest.  A play clock will allow us to practice identifying numbers 1-12, count in sets of 5, and learn the positions of the short hand to tell the hour and the long hand to tell the minutes.  Seriation sticks have also been added to the Math Center to give us a better understanding of graduating sizes and how different lengths will be needed to complete outlines to create shapes, number, and letters.

Throughout the month of May, we will continue to review letters, beginning and ending sounds, rhyming words, and number concepts.

May I take this time to Thank You for  allowing Mrs. Stark and myself the joy of helping your child in school.  It gives us great pleasure to see firsthand the knowledge they have gained and how they have grown into responsible individuals.
