WELCOME
TO 6th GRADE September 2007
I’m
Mrs. Sue Hug and I will be your child’s homeroom teacher. Mrs. Stoffer will be their Math and English teacher. I look
forward to a great year, having had your children last year for Science,
Spelling and Religion. This year will certainly be a unique one for all of us.
I look forward to the change of pace. The following is a brief description of some
of the topics we will cover this year.
RELIGION-
The focus is on the Old Testament. They will learn the early history of our
religion. They will develop an understanding of how Jesus is the fulfillment of
the prophet’s teachings in the Old Testament.
ENGLISH-
Increasing knowledge of the parts of speech and incorporating them into
different forms of writing. Toward the end of the year they will pull all these
skills together in the form of a Research Paper.
SPELLING-
We will follow the same procedure as last year. A normal week will start with
new words, alphabetical order, definitions and sentences; work in the book;
writing 3 times each; play Sparkle for review; test.
READING-
As in previous years Spelling and
HEALTH/SCIENCE-
We will begin our year with a quarter of health, building on past concepts of
the physical body, mental health and responsible decision making to remain
healthy. The rest of the year focuses on Earth Science. We will learn about
space, earth structures and rocks.
SOCIAL
STUDIES- This year deals with World Cultures. We will travel to the different
continents learning about the histories and cultures of many countries. The
students will be asked, on a rotating basis, to share a current event article
on a world happening. I ask you to encourage them to start paying attention to
the news (radio, TV, newspaper, internet).
I
hope this gives you a glimpse of our action packed year. Any questions or
comments, feel free to contact me at school. I look forward to working with you
and your children.
